The Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage that begins in Southern France and ends at Santiago de Compostela in Northwestern Spain. The total distance of the Camino is 800 km and I hope to complete it in six weeks. The map of the route is shown at the bottom of this page.

Countdown to the Camino

I'll be leaving for Spain in eighteen days. My new friends (who have already hiked the Camino) have been a tremendous support with advice on packing, books to recommend and shared memories of places to highlight in my guidebook. My friend Fran McAlister is joining me for the first week and we have had a few classes of Spanish (Hola - Como esta?) but we know the Camino will have it's own vocabulary and many other languages to navigate as well!

The scallop shell is the symbol for the Camino de Santiago - many pilgrims wear a shell on the pack and there are markers with the shell along the route.

  1. Hi Gill: I am enjoying reading your blog so much. The experience you are having is incredible and so similar to those books I've read about others' experiences. You sound like you are ada[tomg very well to the various experiences. Your descriptions of the area, sounds, senses, etc. make me feel like I'm right there with you. I look forward to hearing many many more. (I know know where Libby gets her expressive writing ability).
    Take care. Doreen
